The International 420

The International 420 Class Dinghy is a mono hull planing dinghy with trapeze for the crew, centerboard, a tapered and tunable Bermuda rig and center sheeting. It carries a main, jib and spinnaker and is designed for a crew of two. The name describes the overall length of the boat in centimeters (the boat is exactly 4.2 meters long).

Congratulations to I-420 – Team USA for their performance during the World Championship in San Remo, Italy.

The Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the US I-42 0Class Association wants to extend its congratulations to the entire compliment of Team USA Sailors that competed in the 420 Open / 420 Women’s / & U17 Fleets at the World Championship in San Remo, Italy.  For many of you, this was your first major regatta with the best sailors in the Class from the World stage – I am confident that the experience will serve you well as you advance in the months and years to come.

Conditions were difficult and the competition was daunting, but overall the entire Team and coaches did a great job representing the United States – You should all be proud of your accomplishment.  While your end results may not have been what you hoped for, you were thrown difficult weather and wind conditions the likes of which could stump even the best sailors.  Now it’s time to take what you learned and set your sights on the next major I-420 Class events.

In the overall experience, I would ask that you look to the skill and accomplishment of Wiley & Jack.  They had a couple hiccups and a relatively rough day during the event – but they stayed focused on preparation, sailing disciplines, staying calm and making the necessary adjustments to claw their way back into a strong podium position – our congratulations and kudos go out to them for their perseverance and determination - and a great overall regatta performance.

Whether or not you finished on the podium, you learned many things that will help you progress - this is one of many great learning experiences that will shape not only your sailing skills, but also your personal character, confidence and knowledge.

We are proud of you all.
